Also referred to as 'The Old Woman, Hewla was once a Priestess of the Resurrection Temple. She became corrupted by evil and was forced to leave the temple, but used what she learned there to become near immortal - having lived for almost a thousand years. She is also a witch, but more specifically a powerful Chaos Sorceress who has the ability to summon demons from The Pit. Other known skills include scheming, a near mastery of psychological manipulation, a talent for the use of poison and a mixed bag of other magical powers from astral projection, through the possession of small animals, to the ability to force an enemy to spontaneously combust.
She is also known for her skills as a crafter of powerfully enchanted weapons, having made a swords for the Tantrian king and even Gorben, the once great emperor of Ventria. By far her most famous pieces however, are the legendary Swords of Night and Day, which she based off of the ancient Swords of Blood and Fire. As far as can be told, any weapon that she creates will be powered, or at least enhanced, by a bound, resident demon, which whilst greatly increasing the utility of the weapon, will also tend to have a malevolent effect on the owner, creating an almost addictive jealously of an reliance on it and typically fostering any and all negative aspects of their personality. She may also have created Snaga, however this has never been confirmed - it is known that she sought Snaga at one time to remove and re-purpose its resident demon but the level of power and autonomy demonstrated by Snaga's resident is not demonstrated in any of her acknowledged works.
Over the centuries Hewla has kept a close eye on her descendants from afar, however in recent years her bloodline has dwindled until she only has one living relative remaining: Jianna, the Witch Queen of Nashaan. Whom she protects fiercely, even in The Void after her death, to ensure Jianna's resurrection a half-millennium later as The Eternal.
